Spring: April to June
Spring is one of the two best seasons. Temperatures are mild, there is little or no snow on the trail and the days are long, which gives a comfortable margin for the early summit start. Early in the season some snow can still lie near the top, so ask your guide how the path looks.
Summer: July and August
The valleys are hot, but the summit stays cool. Afternoon storms are possible in the mountains, so the day starts early and the walking is finished before the afternoon. Nights at the refuge are still cold: pack a warm layer even in August.
Autumn: September and October
Autumn is the second of the two best seasons. The summer heat has gone, the trail is clear and the light is good for photographs. Nights get colder as October goes on.
Winter: December to March
From December to March the mountain is under snow. Toubkal then becomes a winter climb that needs crampons, an ice axe and some mountain experience, with nights below zero at the refuge. It is beautiful, but plan an extra day and follow your guide's decisions on the weather.
Our guides' tip
Whatever the month, the summit start is early, often around 4 or 5 am, to reach the top around sunrise. Pack a head torch and warm gloves.
How to choose your dates
- Pick April to June or September to October if you want the easiest conditions on a first climb.
- Choose three days instead of two if you are not used to altitude: it gives your body more time to adapt, and it is the better choice in winter, for families and for a first experience above 3,000 m.
- A licensed mountain guide is required to climb Toubkal. Ours also organise the mules, the refuge and your transfer from Marrakech.
Good to know
Weather in the High Atlas can change unexpectedly. In severe weather the local authorities may close the trails to the refuge or to the summit, so reaching the top cannot be guaranteed. Read the trekking conditions on each Toubkal trip before you book.
