Aït Benhaddou, the earthen ksar on the caravan road

Beyond the Tizi n’Tichka pass, on the old caravan road between the Sahara and Marrakech, the ksar of Aït Benhaddou rises above the Ounila river: one of the most beautiful earthen villages in Morocco.

Its fortified houses of red earth, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, climb the hill to an old granary with a view over the valley. The ksar has been the setting of many films and series, and a few families still live there.

Nearby, Ouarzazate is the gateway to the south, with the Taourirt kasbah and its film studios. Aït Benhaddou is a long day trip from Marrakech or the first stop on the road to the Dades valley and the Sahara.
