Ski tours in the High Atlas
- About the program
High altitudes, steep couloirs, and couscous us in the area around Jbel Toubkal. The sun is strong, the Sahara is close, and the snow is African.
For the eighth year, we are arranging a ski trip to Morocco in collaboration with mountain guide Mikke Eriksson and our local promoter, Berber Slimane. Africa is hardly the continent you associate with skis and snow, but the High Atlas mountain range in Morocco offers surprisingly good skiing with varying degrees of difficulty. The area around Jbel Toubkal, which is North Africa’s highest mountain at 4,167 m, is very well-suited to ski touring. A CAF-refuge (Club Alpin Français) is strategically located in a deep valley near the base of Jbel Toubkal. From here, you can reach a number of 4,000-metre peaks with relative ease, which during the winter months are snow covered. During the trip, you will come in contact with the local population of the Atlas Mountains, the Berber people, and become acquainted with their culture. If you enjoy sweet tea, you will appreciate a cup of “Berber whiskey” after a day on the mountain. During the trip, you will also have a powerful encounter with the mythical city of Marrakech. We’ve been arranging ski trips to this region since 1999 and know both the people and mountains well. Mountain guide Mikke Eriksson (UIAGM), who leads this trip and is very familiar with the area, can give you an exciting and full ski week.
When you think of Morocco travel, you probably think of the golden sand dunes of the Sahara Desert or the beach resorts on the coast. Chances are you never dreamed that you could head to this North African country to spend some time snow skiing. In fact Morocco has two ski resorts, both offering white capped ski runs from around January until March and in some cases April. Both are located on the Atlas Mountains and not far from top cities and towns, so they make a fantastic and fun day trip if you want to try something completely out of the normal and spend the day snow skiing in North Africa.
Oukaimeden is located in the High Atlas Mountains just south of Marrakech. In fact these ski slopes are a great day trip from Marrakech if you want to experience what it would be like to snow ski in Africa. The area has a fully functional ski resort complete with ski lifts, three restaurants and twenty trails to choose from. Sitting 3273 meters above sea level, Oukaimeden enjoys snow from January until around March.
